HP PolyServe Software offers a methodology and set of tools, the HP PolyServe Migration Manager, that help expedite and automate the entire SQL Server 2005 migration process. By following a systematic and repeatable approach, including built-in checkpoints, data migration validation and backup safeguards, the risk of human error is mitigated and the time to completion significantly reduced. The HP PolyServe Migration Manager dramatically improves the process of deploying SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition. Through a structured and automated approach, the time required to configure and deploy an average size database is cut from approximately six hours to two hours per database server—a 66% reduction. Whereas a deployment of 100 database instances could take four months or longer for a single DBA, using the HP PolyServe Migration Manager would cut the time to completion to just over a month. Furthermore, the software eases the complexity of configuration and deployment, mitigates the probability of human error and lowers downtime. Reduced time, difficulty, mistakes, and downtime all help minimize the IT and business costs of a SQL Server 2005 migration. A systematic and repeatable process The HP PolyServe Migration Manager delivers a systematic and repeatable process to upgrade instances of SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2005 or SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition. Once installed, the software auto-discovers all SQL Server instances within specified networks. It then provides an intuitive and easy to use interface to select all or a subset of databases to migrate. Once the user has selected which databases to upgrade, the HP PolyServe Migration Manager creates a copy of the existing database and maps it to an automatically created SQL Server 2005. Important data components such as IP addresses, security settings and login information, to name a few, are automatically copied and directly mapped to the new database servers. The upgraded instances mirror the pre-existing database servers, producing a familiar operating environment for DBAs and eliminating tedious configuration processes. Both the original (SQL Server 2000) and upgraded (SQL Server 2005) instances are available to the Database administrator (DBA) throughout the process. This creates a backup safeguard that allows performance validation of the new database servers before the transition is finalized. The DBA decides when to flip the switch and provide user availability to the upgraded database instances. Checkpoints and easy to understand configuration questions facilitate the entire migration, and each step is fully reversible. Altogether, the process follows a logical and phased decision tree and automates the most time consuming aspects of the upgrade. Automation and manual control With the HP PolyServe Migration Manager, users can have as much automation or manual control of the migration process as they desire. DBAs can migrate all instances at once greatly expediting the process of upgrading a large database environment, or choose to perform limited deployments progressively over time. The transfer of data components such as IP addressing, security settings and login information can also be performed automatically or manually. The HP PolyServe Migration Manager provides a backup source for all database systems prior to migration. This allows users to stage the migration before going live by validating success on target systems. In addition, they can generate reports on the migration steps. The level of repeatability, automation, backup and validation capabilities offered by the HP PolyServe Migration Manager eliminates the vast majority of setbacks and human errors that plague many database upgrades—especially in environments with many instances. Reaping benefits beyond migration The advantages of HP PolyServe Software for Microsoft SQL Server with SQL Migration Manager extend well beyond the configuration and deployment of SQL Server 2005. Winner of the Windows® IT Pro “Best of Tech Ed 2006” award for "Most Innovative Product,” HP PolyServe Software for Microsoft SQL Server dramatically enhances an IT environment by providing a shared data platform for SQL Server. As a result, total cost of ownership (TCO) is reduced, DBA productivity is improved and organizations achieve ROI more rapidly.
