Overview :

One of the largest credit unions in the United States with over 1 billion in assets, California Credit Union (CCU) maintains and stores personal information on nearly 80,000 members in its financial systems.

CCU sought to encrypt its backup tapes for keeping customer data secure in transit and in storage at the offsite tape-vault vendor’s facility. As a financial institution, CCU was subject to stringent government regulations that included SB1386 and the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, which required the credit union to protect customer financial information from malicious or unintentional breaches of security. With nearly 60 gigabytes of data to encrypt each night, CCU knew that a software solution was out of the question.

Overview
One of the largest credit unions in the United States with over 1 billion in assets, California Credit Union (CCU) maintains and stores personal information on nearly 80,000 members in its financial systems. It backs up financial systems daily onto tape and sends this tape – with nearly 60 gigabytes of data – to offsite tape storage for disaster recovery purposes. As a financial institution, CCU must adhere to increasingly stringent data privacy regulations and make certain that sensitive information stored on backup tapes remains safe and secure at all times. Through deployment of NeoScale’s CryptoStor security appliance, CCU has accomplished its objectives by:
-Keeping confidential customer information secure at all times
-Restoring all of its financial systems from encrypted backup tapes to ensure disaster preparedness
-Encrypting and decrypting 60 gigabytes of data daily, without impacting backup processes

The Challenge
CCU sought to encrypt its backup tapes for keeping customer data secure in transit and in storage at the offsite tape-vault vendor’s facility. As a financial institution, CCU was subject to stringent government regulations that included SB1386 and the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, which required the credit union to protect customer financial information from malicious or unintentional breaches of security. With nearly 60 gigabytes of data to encrypt each night, CCU knew that a software solution was out of the question.

The Solution
CCU chose CryptoStor Tape over alternative solutions because of its track record in providing transparent operations and seamless integration within customers’ existing network infrastructure. NeoScale was the only vendor that provided SCSI connectivity with secure key management between CCU’s data center and disaster recovery site.
Implemented inline between CCU’s IntegraSys application server and Compaq DLT 320 tape backup system, the NeoScale CryptoStor appliance compressed, encrypted, and digitally signed data during tape backup. Because it encrypted all data at wire-speed, CCU saw no performance degradation during backup.

The Result
With help from NeoScale technology, CCU enhanced its ability to comply with ever-changing government regulations, protected customers’ confidential information, and kept the organization out of breach headlines.
