Backup And Recovery
Backup refers to the copying of data so that these additional copies may be restored after a data loss event. Backups differ from archives and backup systems differ from fault-tolerant systems. Backups are useful primarily for two purposes: to restore a computer to an operational state following a disaster (called disaster recovery) and to restore small numbers of files after they have been accidentally deleted or corrupted.

Backup, despite the breathless hyperbole of many in the industry, is simply a form of insurance. What's important about your backup strategy is getting your systems and data protected in the most effective and affordable manner possible. Speaking plainly - you must be careful that you are in control of your backup strategy rather than your backup strategy (and vendor) being in control of you.

The purpose of deduplication is to provide more storage, particularly backup storage, for less money, right? Then wouldn't it be ridiculous if deduplication vendors were demanding that their customers pay more per terabyte of storage? Or if they were simply pushing the task of integrating, monitoring, and managing deduplication back onto their users?

In these days of rampant data growth, a technology that can increase the effective capacity of a disk-based backup system by a ratio of up to 50:1 is big news. Data deduplication allows you to store up to 50 times more backup data into the same disk footprint — giving you a better chance of restoring your users' lost data from exactly the point they need it. This white paper explains how this innovative data deduplication solution works and also establishes how a 50:1 deduplication ratio may be achieved.

As it has been the trend over the last decade, organizations must continue to deal with growing data storage requirements with the same or less resources. The growing adoption of storage-as-a-service, business intelligence, and big data results in ever more Service Level Agreements that are difficult to fulfill without IT administrators spending ever longer hours in the data center. Many organizations now expect their capital expense growth for storage to be unstoppable, and see operating expense levers - such as purchasing storage systems that are easy to manage - as the only way to control data storage-related costs.
