"When contemplating offering Macs to your workforce, the question of cost inevitably comes up. “Macs are great, but I can buy two PCs for the same price as one Mac,” is a common mentality within IT departments.
However, when comparing the total cost of ownership associated with providing basic services, software, management and support, the outcome (surprising to some) favors Mac over PC. But how can this b
Something odd happened during Selectica’s roll-up strategy. Usually when a technology vendor acquires a number of providers at relatively low valuations, its focus tends to be on financially engineering the various SaaS, maintenance, upsell and other income schemes from the assets. But in Selectica’s case, the acquired became the basis of the company, in a manner in which the sum of the assets became an entirely different equation that it likely even bargained for before getting into the activity in the first place. But sometimes the uncertainty of post-merger integrations can lead to an outcome that benefits all parties involved (including customers) in ways that would be difficult to have imagined going into the process.
The General Data Protection Regulation1 is a European Union regulation with the full title of ‘Regulation on the protection of natural persons with regard to the
processing of personal data and on the free movement
of such data, which repeals Directive 95/46/EC (General Data Protection Regulation)’.
It’s the first comprehensive overhaul and replacement of European data protection legislation in over twenty years and could be the most significant regulatory framework
to hit organizations since Sarbanes-Oxley in 2002. Its purpose is to replace the varying implementations across Europe of the earlier EU Data Protection Directive with a single harmonized EU regulation. The intended outcome is a standardized set of expectations about how an organization must manage and protect personally identifiable information on employees, clients and other applicable data subjects.
Any organization that holds data on EU citizens, regardless of where it is domiciled, within the EU or otherwise, is in sco

Delivering the best possible care to every patient is a complex, interconnected process that involves every department in a healthcare facility. From the moment a patient enters a facility, a wide range of activities must be performed by many different employees from different functional areas — in a timely and efficient way—to ensure the best possible outcome, including performing tests, collecting specimens, administering medications and delivering treatments. Each one of these activities must be coordinated and documented as part of an overall care plan. But the first step is making sure clinicians are treating the right patient—in the right way—every time.
Zebra’s white paper explores the critical impact positive patient identification (PPID) has on patient safety throughout the administrative, diagnostic and treatment phases of a patient’s stay. The paper also explores how PPID can improve staff efficiency and help healthcare organizations meet the needs of changing patient dem

Until recently, Manhattan Associates had used a traditional secondary storage solution to manage its large and rapidly expanding data footprint of ~1PB. Designed for traditional workflows, the company’s IT team realized it had become cost prohibitive to add features to their existing environment to support their VM level backups. Like most traditional storage options, the existing solution did not scale-out linearly, and complicated the environment by creating silos. With Cohesity’s scale-out architecture, the team was able to start small and grow their Cohesity environment on the go, yet keep it unified and simple. See how Manhanttan Associates achieved operational efficiency and lowered their TCO by supporting VM data protection, supporting native integration with the public cloud and providing simple converged solution for data protection, target storage and files. In an age where your users demand no-fail experience, continuous testing has become a mission critical component for engineering teams of all sizes. However, while this topic was once discussed at lower levels, the conversation has made it all the way to the C-suite. No matter your industry, if your team isn’t thinking about testing at a high level, then there is a chance that you are missing out on revenue due to flawed app functionality, delayed releases and slowed innovation. It is important to understand the business benefits of continuous testing and automation to avoid these outcomes, and make the changes necessary to set your applications up for success.
collectd is an open source daemon that collects system and application performance metrics. With this data, collectd then has the ability to work alongside other tools to help identify trends, issues and relationships not easily observable.
Read this e-book to get a deep dive into what collectd is and how you can begin incorporating it into your organization’s environment.
Enterprise customers can take advantage of the many benefits provided by Amazon Web Services (AWS) to achieve business agility, cost savings, and high availability by running their SAP environments on the AWS Cloud.
Many Enterprise customers run SAP production workloads on AWS today; including those that run on NON-SAP DBs (Oracle, MS SQL, DB2) or on SAP DBs (SAP HANA, SAP ASE). To support the demand of high memory instances, AWS have disclosed their SAP HANA instance roadmap (8TB and 16TB in 2018) and just made 4TB x1e instances available. A few examples of how AWS helped SAP customers cut costs, improve performance and agility include BP reducing 1/3 of their SAP infrastructure cost, Zappos successfully migrating to SAP HANA on AWS in less than 48 hours and enabling a major Healthcare and Life Science company to run BW on HANA with 30% better performance vs. on premise.
This guide is intended for SAP customers and partners who want to learn about the benefits and options for running SAP solutions on AWS, or who want to know how to implement and operate their SAP environment effectively on AWS.

Organisations that Deploy Information Governance Strategies are more Successful at Achieving these Desired Outcomes
Big data analytics offer organizations an unprecedented opportunity to derive new business insights and drive smarter decisions. The outcome of any big data analytics project, however, is only as good as the quality of the data being used. Although organizations may have their structured data under fairly good control, this is often not the case with the unstructured content that accounts for the vast majority of enterprise information. Good information governance is essential to the success of big data analytics projects. Good information governance also pays big dividends by reducing the costs and risks associated with the management of unstructured information. This paper explores the link between good information governance and the outcomes of big data analytics projects and takes a look at IBM's StoredIQ solution.
High-priority big data and analytics projects often target customer-centric outcomes such as improving customer loyalty or improving up-selling. In fact, an IBM Institute for Business Value study found that nearly half of all organizations with active big data pilots or implementations identified customer-c entric outcomes as a top objective (see Figure 1).1 However, big data and analytics can also help companies understand how changes to products or services will impact customers, as well as address aspects of security and intelligence, risk and financial management, and operational optimization.
As organizations develop next-generation applications for the digital era, many are using cognitive computing ushered in by IBM Watson® technology. Cognitive applications can learn and react to customer preferences, and then use that information to support capabilities such as confidence-weighted outcomes with data transparency, systematic learning and natural language processing.
To make the most of these next-generation applications, you need a next-generation database. It must handle a massive volume of data while delivering high performance to support real-time analytics. At the same time, it must provide data availability for demanding applications, scalability for growth and flexibility for responding to changes.
Traditionally, the best practice for mission-critical Oracle Database backup and recovery was to use storage-led, purpose-built backup appliances (PBBAs) such as Data Domain, integrated with RMAN, Oracle’s automated backup and recovery utility. This disk-based backup approach solved two problems:
1) It enabled faster recovery (from disk versus tape)
2) It increased recovery flexibility by storing many more backups online, enabling restoration from that data to recover production databases; and provisioning copies for test/dev.
At its core, however, this approach remains a batch process that involves many dozens of complicated steps for backups and even more steps for recovery. Oracle’s Zero Data Loss Recovery Appliance (RA) customers report that total cost of ownership (TCO) and downtime costs (e.g. lost revenue due to database or application downtime) are significantly reduced due to the simplification and, where possible, the automation of the backup and recovery process.
This paper introduces a brief explanation of digital continuity and the opportunities and threats that it faces.
The movement of product information to the digital domain in the 21st century has meant that we do not have physical items, like pieces of paper, which we can authenticate as being reliable information for decision making. Digital continuity is meant to remedy shortcomings of the digital environment by ensuring that information is unique, authoritative, current, and consistent, or more simply, has the characteristic of singularity.
This paper includes:
• Digital continuity within the Product Lifecycle
• Digital continuity within manufacturing
• Threats to digital continuity
If we implement digital continuity correctly, we have all the advantages of the singularity of paper documents, but with the instantaneous and simultaneous ability to access the latest, updated information.
