Think of a wildfire that quickly spreads as it increases in speed and power. That is what is happening today as data growth increases the volume and management complexity of storage, backup and recovery. Now think of trying to stop that fire with a garden hose. Your traditional backup and recovery process is equally under-equipped to manage and facilitate operations that need more speed, efficiency, scalability and reliability to handle today’s 24/7, always-on environment. Here we examine the benefits of moving from a solution comprised of multiple point products to a holistic data protection platform designed to serve today’s enterprise.

Around-the-clock global operations, data growth, and server virtualization all together can complicate protection and recovery strategies. They affect when and how often you can perform backups, increase the time required to back up, and ultimately affect your ability to successfully restore. These challenges can force lower standards for recovery objectives, such as reducing the frequency of backup jobs or protecting fewer applications, both of which can introduce risk. High-speed snapshot technologies and application integration can go a long way toward meeting these needs, and they have quickly become essential elements of a complete protection strategy. But snapshot copies have often been managed separately from traditional backup processes. Features like cataloging for search and retrieval as well as tape creation usually require separate management and do not fully leverage snapshot capabilities. To eliminate complexity and accelerate protection and recovery, you need a solution

Traditional backup systems fail to meet the database protection and recovery requirements of modern organizations. These systems require ever-growing backup windows, negatively impact performance in mission-critical production databases, and deliver recovery time objectives (RTO) and recovery point objectives (RPO) measured in hours or even days, failing to meet the requirements of high-volume, high transactional databases -- potentially costing millions in lost productivity and revenue, regulatory penalties, and reputation damage due to an outage or data loss.

As a smaller organization tasked with big responsibilities – public health and exceptional customer service around the clock – Vallejo needed a backup solution that kept pace with the growing needs of their company and customers and was easy to manage. They understood that backups played a critical role to success, but their existing solution was slow, cumbersome and expensive in their new, virtualized environment. They needed a solution that would boost backup speeds within their existing HP architecture while simplifying and streamlining management and cutting costs.
Retailer Uses Cradlepoint Solution to Provide Wireless Failover & Redundancy for Point-of-Sale (PoS) Systems
Cradlepoint devices provide wireless backup of wired Internet connections for retail superstores in the Blinds To Go system. In the event of an outage of the primary Internet land line (T1/fi ber, DSL, or cable) at a Blinds To Go site, Cradlepoint devices automatically switch to its wireless 3G/4G broadband connection within 30 seconds. The point-of-sale (POS) systems connected to the Cradlepoint router continue to operate at broadband speeds without further interruption, ensuring continuous uptime for POS transactions at the Blinds To Go superstore.
With continued expansion of organizational storage allocation requirements, the time required for file-based data backup also continues to increase yet the time allotted for this data backup remains constant, exposing a critical issue. Though backup software vendors continue making advancements in technology to speed up the process, disk fragmentation will continue to remain an unresolved issue that must be addressed on the file system level to solve this bottleneck.
In rigorous testing, openBench Labs found that Dell AppAssure 5? offered significant advantages in ease-of-use, backup speed and recovery time. Read their complete findings: Unified Backup: Virtual & Physical.
Although ESG continues to see the vast majority of IT organizations living within a disk-plus-tape world, no one can argue against the idea that the cloud is becoming a viable and attractive component of any data protection architecture. Modern disk and tape solutions have overwhelming benefits for ROI, but those benefits can often be expanded by leveraging the economics and additional agility capabilities of a cloud tier. And all of those tiers would benefit from smarter data protection and preservation mechanisms through the combination of both backups and archiving.
Although modern backup solutions can offer significant recovery agility, backup as an IT process is generally less than “enough” for the data protection goals that IT is being asked to deliver. As IT is embracing snapshots, replication, archiving, and availability mechanisms to enhance business continuity/disaster recovery (BC/DR) preparedness, it is important to realize that there is a better way than piecemealing each component, and then wondering why CapEx and OpEx are so out of line.
In this report, we’ll examine first why HP StoreOnce and HP Data Protector products are truly game-changing on their own rights. Then, we will look at why they get even "better together” as a complete BURA solution that can be more flexibly deployed to meet backup challenges than any other solution in the market today.
