The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) was first introduced in 2004 to increase controls over credit card holder data and to reduce the chances of credit card fraud. Validation is required annually and over the years, it has evolved with new revisions periodically. The latest one, version 3.2 came into force in April 2016. Until the end of January 2018, PCI DSS and Payment Application Data Security Standards (PA-DSS) are considered best practice to implement, and starting February 1, 2018, are considered a requirement.

If your company stores or processes credit card information, you must be able to demonstrate compliance with the Payment Card Industry (PCI) Data Security Standards (DSS). These standards include requirements for security management, policies, procedures, network architecture, design, and other critical protective measures. They also include one very prescriptive requirement:  Section 6.6 mandates that organizations secure all Web applications by conducting a code review or installing an application layer firewall. Companies have had a very difficult time passing the other parts of Section 6 and they have experienced a rising number of data breaches.
