Pg. 1Introduction
Global network services are critical components of corporations' communications methods, connecting offices with manufacturing facilities, sales offices and suppliers around the world. The main goal of a global network to a corporation is to provide the ability for remote offices to efficiently share information and resources with corporate headquarters and other offices across the globe. As complex as the network design and implementation might be, it is largely invisible to the majority of the people in the organization that use it, until degradation of traffic, an outage or a disaster strike. At that point, it becomes the focal point and the organization loses its ability to focus on its business and end-customers, impacting revenue.
Managed Network Service Providers implement and maintain global networks to facilitate communications between offices, allowing corporations to focus on running their business. In selecting the right provider and network solution, corporations have an array of factors to consider, one of the most critical aspects revolving around the underpinning of the network: facilities, hardware and network, essentially the infrastructure, that defines the foundation of the overall solution.
Network infrastructure can make or break a solution at every level. The key components directly impact customer issues including performance, resiliency and security. Virtela's networking infrastructure is unique in its ability to meet these SMchallenges for global enterprises. Here we outline the capabilities and benefits of our Global Service Fabric (GSF).
Virtela's Unfair Advantage: A new breed of networkless managed networking services vendors - global Virtual Network Operators (VNOs) - is emerging and will be an important catalyst in transforming The "Super-Integrator" Model the global telecommunications outsourcing landscape. ~ Forrester Research
Virtela partially falls into the network service provider category of a Virtual Network Operator (VNO). Typically this definition includes the concept that a VNO is a service provider who "owns nothing", but instead leverages the existing physical infrastructures of facilities based carriers. For Virtela, this definition is only half correct! We are best described as a hybrid, in that it combines the best characteristics of both the VNO and a facilities based carrier.
Virtela is a VNO in that it does not own the commodity fiber and copper infrastructures for backbone and access connectivity. It is not a VNO in that Virtela does own the most critical physical infrastructure assets - the edge of the network, where all SMnetwork intelligence and service layers reside. This is what Virtela calls Regional Policy Centers (RPC). These RPCs in turn form the foundation of Virtela's multi-carrier GSF of hundreds of network providers worldwide.
There is no single carrier infrastructure that does everything at the best price and best performance around the world. Virtela Vendor Network Technology Aggregation Aggregation Aggregationaggregates and integrates the best access and backbone infrastructures into our GSF via the intelligent architecture overlay of RPCs.
