Selecting a new manufacturing execution system (MES) can be difficult. With so many options in the marketplace, it can be overwhelming to sort out which one is the right fit for your business.
In this report, we believe Gartner provides some clarity by naming a selection of vendors that specialize in creating MES solutions that support the unique capabilities of discrete industrial manufacturers and fit inside Gartner’s Magic Quadrant Perspective for MES. According to Gartner, recommended assessment criteria for technology and service selection are:
- Relevant industry experience—Domain knowledge is the most critical aspect manufacturers should consider when evaluating technology and services. The most compelling technology can be made worthless if the vendor or service provider is not sufficiently knowledgeable about the unique challenges of your industry.
- Industry-specific functionality—Use Gartner’s list of capabilities when evaluating your MES provider. Higher evaluations should be given to organizations that can provide these functionalities out of the box. Supplier collaboration—Manufacturers should look for opportunities to identify and adopt MES functionality that integrates well with other supply chain technologies such as supply chain visibility, production planning and scheduling, and warehouse management.
- Financial viability—Market pressures toward consolidation are strongly affecting this market, so financial viability is critical to ensure that the vendor has the resources to continue serving clients and growing the business. Look for revenue growth and positive cash flow as evidence of financial strength.
- Evidence of innovation—Manufacturing is evolving rapidly, given the advances in Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), cloud-enablement and government/industry initiatives such as Industrie 4.0. Successful niche vendors will keep up with these broader advances.
