Why InMage? Utah State University had just completed a nine-month effort to implement an enterprise class Microsoft Exchange/Outlook 2007 environment. Because of the institution's critical reliance on e-mail and scheduling, USU's next challenge was to ensure that, in the event of an outage or failure, they could quickly recovery from hardware, application, or data corruption issues with minimal impact on faculty and staff. Utah State evaluated the native data protection solutions available within Exchange 2007 and quickly decided it was not nearly enough protection for them; the native recovery mechanisms didn't allow them to roll-back to any point in time, and did not have remote failover capability. Clustering would have only protected them from hardware failovers - which their research had shown was only part of their challenge. In addition, the WAN link to their remote facility offered low bandwidth at best. To make their environment as stable as possible, they preferred a solution that would leverage VSS to create consistency points for faster recovery times. After evaluating several solutions, the obvious choice for them was InMage DR-Scout. InMage provided them with local and remote protection, eliminated gaps in their data protection strategy, and allowed them to quickly fine-tune recovery points - similar to the way a DVR works. With InMage's intrinsic application consistency, they could quickly failover their exchange servers faster than it took people to realize their primary servers were down. InMage asynchronous replication allowed them to use their existing WAN connection and still maintain a 'near-zero' RPO at their remote location. In the event that they did need to failover, InMage also allowed them to quickly failback - something the other solutions they considered simply could not address. The faculty and staff have been pleased with the improved level of system reliability and protection USU now enjoys.
